Common interview questions for care assistant jobs

A care assistant interview will typically follow a structured format and therefore it is very important to prepare for it in order to ensure that you are ready to answer the questions in a confident manner.

Why Do You Want to Work in Care?

This is not a job for someone who simply likes to help people. This work needs to be in your blood. So describe a time when you were involved in helping someone in need. Perhaps you helped a neighbour or a family member or even a client in a previous job. Try to recall as much detail as possible about the situation and how you dealt with it. Also try to remember the outcome of the situation and how it made you feel.

A Time You Helped Someone in Difficulty – Your Experience As A Care Assistant

This is a behavioural interview question, so you should recount a specific situation in your past where you helped someone in need. Give a clear description of the scenario, explain what you did and what the end result was. Try not to be too vague in your recounting of past events – a good story about helping a neighbour with shopping, caring for a sick family member or helping an old client with daily activities is so much better than a generic answer.

How Would You Handle a Client Who Refuses Care?

When a client refuses care, you must remain patient and respect their dignity. Explain to them the reasons why you are there to care for them and listen to their concerns. If necessary, inform your supervisor and seek further advice. Do not override a client’s refusal of care.

What Would You Do If You Noticed Signs of Abuse?

Document the incident and report to your supervisor immediately. Safeguarding of clients is a major responsibility of care assistants and you must be able to show that you understand your role in this regard. It is also helpful to have knowledge of the HIQA’s standards for home care services.

How Do You Manage Your Time Between Your Clients?

As a care assistant you will have to manage your time between different clients and it is best to prioritise between clients that need the most care first, leave enough time between different locations for travelling, and report any problems with scheduling to your coordinator in advance and not let it pile up.
