Like any connected device, your smart TV equipment needs to be updated so you can be sure that you have access to the latest features and that it remains safe and secure. Apple TV boxes are no exception. With the company recently launching tvOS 12, what do you need to do to make sure your device is up-to-date?
Preparing to upgrade
Unlike updating the OS on a computer or smartphone, doing so on your Apple TV is relatively straightforward. Upgrading to tvOS 12 gets you some new features including support for Dolby Atmos 3D audio, a password auto-fill feature for the remote app, and some snazzy NASA screen savers.
The tvOS12 update should work with most newer versions of Apple TV, but you can check if yours is compatible at https://www.imore.com/will-my-apple-tv-work-tvos-12. If yours can be upgraded, it’s a good idea to back up the contents by syncing it with the iCloud feature to ensure you don’t lose anything if the upgrade fails.
As always with a TV device, it’s important to have a good antenna to ensure you get the best reception. Bath TV aerial installation experts such as

Upgrading
Once you’ve determined everything is in order, you can just turn automatic updates on and your Apple TV will update itself overnight. However, if you’d rather not wait – or if you have updates turned off – it is possible to launch an update manually.
Open up the Settings app, select System and then go to Software Updates. From there, click Update Software, followed by Download and Install. Finally, click Update Now. Then, you just need to wait for your box to install the update and reboot.
If the update doesn’t work correctly, you can go to Settings, System, Restart to get it to reboot, or hold down Menu and Home together to force a reset. If your Apple TV still won’t work, you can connect it to your computer with a USB cable and launch iTunes. From the Devices menu, choose Restore Apple TV. This will reset the device to its default settings. If it still won’t work, it’s probably time to book a Genius appointment at your local Apple store and get the experts to take a look.
