What to Expect at Bouldering Hereford
Read our Bouldering Hereford first visit guide to make your first visit to the Hereford bouldering facility so much easier if you have never been to a bouldering gym before.
The Layout
The majority of the facility is an open plan room with angled walls and also some of the walls are upright. The holds used on the climbing walls are of many different colours and are of many different shapes and sizes. The flooring is made up of very thick crash mats, and as bouldering does not involve the use of harnesses or ropes to climb with, this means that climbers can fall from the whole time without any risk of serious injury.
Finding a Problem to Try
Each problem is marked out on the wall by coloured tape or holds, so you can tell which holds to use for each climb. Start off with the yellow or green holds as these are the lower grade climbs and will be easier for you to complete as you get used to climbing.
Watching Before You Climb
Spend a few minutes observing at the rest area where there are lots of pictures and lots of climbers attempting the same problems as you. Most people are happy to share beta (information on how to complete a move) if you ask them.
The Atmosphere
Bouldering Hereford has a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, and as with most bouldering venues, there is little to no competition, so this is a great place for beginners to come and learn how to climb.
What Facilities to Expect
Most physical activity facilities, such as bouldering gyms, are required to adhere to a number of standards in the UK. So at Bouldering Hereford you can expect to find a number of facilities, including changing rooms, a place to rent your bouldering shoes, and a supply of chalk to keep your hands in good condition for climbing.
Try to go at a quieter time in the middle of the week to have more space to have a go at the problems.
