Who was Florence Nightingale?

Florence Nightingale is one of the greats of British nursing, along with Mary Seacole. She was to be a driving force in changing the nature of nursing and care work. Appalled by the loss of life and injury in the Crimean War, Nightingale took it upon herself to go to the peninsula and set up a field hospital to help soldiers recover properly after they were injured. She correctly theorised that with care and attention, the recovery and survival rate would be much higher than it had been before. Although it could be said that her role in the war has been exaggerated. What is undisputed is that she creates modern nursing and lays the foundation for it afterwards.

Her work did not stop when the war ended. She carried on training nurses and writing extensively on the subject. She wrote this so it could be understood by those, not from an academic background. Nightingale was born into wealth. She wanted for nothing, but she did not become someone who would be simply married off. Her parents were very liberal for the time; both she and her sister received a vital education in History, English and, unusually, Science and Mathematics rather than just learning to be “a lady of society.”
