Basic First Aid Tips for Everyone

Knowing basic first aid can make a real difference in emergencies. Even simple actions can help save lives and stop injuries from getting worse.

1. Checking ABC – Airway, Breathing, Circulation

The first step in any emergency is to check ABC. Make sure the person’s airway is clear, confirm they are breathing, and check their circulation by feeling for a pulse. Call emergency services immediately if there are problems.

2. Sprains and Preventing Bleeding

For sprains, rest the injured area, apply a cold pack and keep it elevated. For bleeding, apply firm pressure with a clean cloth. Raise the injured area if possible.

3. Burns and Scalds

For minor burns or scalds, run cool water over the affected area for 10-20 minutes. Cover with a sterile non-sticking dressing. Avoid ice or oily creams. Seek medical help for serious burns, especially on the face or hands or if it covers a large area.

4. Trauma

In cases of trauma, such as a fall or accident, try to keep the person still and calm. Avoid moving them unless absolutely necessary. Check for bleeding, broken bones or head injuries and call emergency services immediately.

5. CPR

If someone is not breathing, begin CPR immediately. Place the heel of one hand on the centre of the chest, the other hand on top, and give firm, fast compressions. Continue until help arrives or the person starts breathing again.
